烯烴復分解反應的歷史可以追溯到20世紀50年代，起源于高分子化學研究，涉及金屬催化劑存在下烯烴雙鍵的重組。與其它反應相比，該反應由鎳、鎢、釕和鉬的過渡金屬卡賓配合物催化，副產(chǎn)物及廢物排放少，更加環(huán)保，因此被廣泛應用于醫(yī)藥和聚合物工業(yè)中。
